Amelia Porges is a counsel at Sidley Austin, focusing on international dispute resolution in the WTO and investor-state arbitration, market access and trade in services, with a special interest in Japan and East Asian trade and investment. She advises businesses, trade associations, and governments on using trade and investment rules to solve market access problems and resolve disputes. She has argued before WTO and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) panels and the WTO Appellate Body, and has advised clients in WTO disputes and international negotiations.

Before private practice, Ms Porges served as the senior counsel for dispute settlement and head of enforcement at the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), where she guided USTR's WTO dispute settlement programme in over 100 government-to-government disputes during the first five years of the WTO. Earlier at USTR, she was active in negotiations on trade with Japan, tariffs, regulatory trade barriers, and agriculture. From 1990 to 1994 during the Uruguay Round trade negotiations, Ms Porges served as senior legal officer and counsellor for legal affairs at the GATT Secretariat in Geneva, advising on trade disputes, negotiations and drafting of the WTO Agreement.

Ms Porges is a commissioner of the Japan-US Friendship Commission and a US representative in the US-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange. She is listed in The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers (Trade and Customs), Chambers Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business, Chambers Global World's Leading Lawyers for Business, and Who's Who in America.
