The Asian practice of the International Arbitration Group of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates (Skadden) brings a vast breadth of knowledge and experience to the resolution of international disputes. The practice (which will be headquartered in Hong Kong from early 2009) works closely with arbitration experts in Skadden's other offices across the world. Members of the Asian International Arbitration Group have represented clients before every major international arbitral institution, but specialise in handling cases before the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), as well as conducting ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL and other rules. Our arbitration lawyers offer the full range of arbitration advice, including drafting arbitration agreements, conducting arbitrations and enforcing awards, and are particularly experienced in cases involving different systems of national law, transnational law and public international law. Many of our lawyers are also bilingual (with fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin) and have practised litigation and arbitration in more than one legal system. The arbitration practice uses small, focused teams of lawyers for every case and provides a streamlined and cost-efficient service. We act for sovereign states, banks, multinational companies and major institutions in the commercial, telecommunications, construction, energy and financial services fields. Some of our recent contentious work in Asia has included acting for the owner of a South East Asian pulp mill in a supplier dispute, a Chinese export corporation in the arbitration of contract claims against a US metal importer, and a Philippine-British joint venture in a dispute with a contractor regarding the construction of a power station in the Philippines. Members of our practice have been featured in Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business (international arbitration); Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Experts in International Arbitration, The Legal 500 and The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitrators. This year's Chamber Global stated: 'If there is such a thing as a truly international firm Ð with an international client base and servicing that client base in an international manner Ð then that firm is Skadden. It has really distinguished itself.' Able to draw on the depth and coverage of Skadden's 2,000 lawyers in 25 offices worldwide, we offer clients an unrivalled advantage in planning for and resolving international disputes. |
