Veijo Heiskanen is partner with Lalive. He specialises in international arbitration, including investment arbitration, and public international law. He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in numerous international arbitration proceedings (under the rules of the ICC, ICSID, WIPO, UNCITRAL, Swiss Chambers, Cairo Regional Center - CRCICA, Finnish Chamber of Commerce) in relation to oil and gas, investment, construction, M&A, intellectual property, telecommunications and other international contracts disputes. He also has extensive experience as counsel, adviser and arbitrator in international claims proceedings, including the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, the United Nations Compensation Commission and the UN Claims Commission in Kosovo. He acted as an expert to the Arbitration Commission for Former Yugoslavia (1993).Dr Heiskanen is Adjunct Professor of International Law at the University of Helsinki, teaches international commercial arbitration at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lausanne and also taught at the Hague Academy of International Law in 2002. He is a member of the ICSID and AAA (ICDR) panels of arbitrators, and of numerous professional associations, including IBA, ILA, American Society of International Law, LCIA, IAI, ASA and Finnish Arbitration Association. He graduated from the University of Helsinki (LLB, 1983; LL Lic, 1985) and holds an LLM and a Doctorate of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard Law School (1988 and 1992).
Dr Heiskanen speaks English, French and Finnish and has a working knowledge of German and Swedish.
