David W Rivkin

David W Rivkin, a litigation partner in Debevoise & Plimpton LLP's New York and London offices, has broad experience in the areas of international litigation and arbitration. He has handled international arbitrations throughout the world and before virtually every major arbitration institution, including the ICC, AAA, LCIA, ICSID, IACAC and the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. Subjects of these arbitrations have included long-term energy concessions, investment treaties, joint venture agreements, insurance coverage, construction contracts, distribution agreements and intellectual property, among others. His representations include Occidental Petroleum Corporation in winning US$75 million in damages in one investment treaty arbitration and currently in a separate BIT arbitration arising from Ecuador's expropriation of Occidental, and Argentina's largest private bondholder in seeking to enforce a US$720 million judgment he previously won against that government.

Mr Rivkin is active in many professional organisations. Among others, he is chair of the 30,000 lawyer legal practice division of the International Bar Association, which includes more than 50 substantive committees; he previously served for four years as chair of the IBA's Committee on Arbitration and ADR. He is also a member of the executive committee of the board of directors of the American Arbitration Association, where he is chair of the law committee and where he has also headed task forces to revise the association's international and commercial arbitration rules; a member of the board of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce; president of the North American Users' Council of the LCIA, for which he previously served as vice president of the court. Additionally, Mr Rivkin has written frequently on topics relating to international arbitration and international litigation, including two books.

Mr Rivkin is consistently ranked as one of the top international dispute resolution practitioners in the world. His recognitions include: along with his partner Donald Francis Donovan, the 2006 Chambers Award for Excellence as the top international arbitration lawyers in the United States; the only American in the Most Highly Regarded Individuals - Global category for international arbitration in Who's Who Legal (2007); one of the top eleven ranked international arbitration practitioners worldwide in Chambers Global (2007); listed as a Leading Individual for international arbitration in PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook 2007 and recently listed as one of the top 20 Arbitration Elite in the world; and one of the Best of the Best in Euromoney's 2007 rankings for international arbitration.
