The dollar value of Sullivan & Cromwell's arbitration portfolio speaks for itself. It is one of New York's more prominent firms for arbitration. Rankings usually put it on a par with Simpson Thacher and Hughes Hubbard & Reed for arbitration nationally (as the pack that is chasing Debevoise & Plimpton and White & Case).
The two co-chairs of arbitration, James Carter and Joseph Neuhaus, have long featured in The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration. Carter is "deeply experienced" and "fantastic". Neuhaus "is someone I rate as counsel", said one very knowledgeable source. Carter sits regularly these days as an arbitrator, and often as a chair in addition to his advocacy work.
Several of the partners in London are also accumulating a track record. Long-time London partner Robert Osgood has represented BP in international arbitration, and subsequent litigation in New York, over investments in Kazakhstan. GAR has been tracking the work of John Hardiman and associate Jonathan Cross, from the London office, in a dispute with a Turkish joint venture partner. Hardiman and Cross's client TeliaSonera was recently given a favourable award by a panel chaired by Michael Schneider. TeliaSonera has been given the right to buy a disputed bloc of shares by that panel.
