Macleod Dixon is the only Canadian firm to have members based full-time in Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. The firm, originally from Calgary, opened in Moscow in 1990, in Almaty in 1995, in Caracas in 1997 and Rio de Janeiro in 2001. It is also accredited in Kazakhstan.

The expansion has been driven by the firm's clients in the energy or natural resources industries. The arbitration practice consists of two partners in Calgary and one in Caracas, who major in international arbitration. In Canada, Jack Marshall QC leads the practice. He is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration. He is also on the ICC's arbitration roster for Canada and is a former chairman of the firm. Three of the firm's partners in Caracas, Ram'oacuten Alvins, Elisabeth Eljuri and Luis Andueza, are on the panel of arbitrators at the Caracas Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Centre. Macleod Dixon's recent merits hearing was a dispute worth US$200 million arbitration under UNCITRAL rules, between an oil company and its insurer. Other matters have taken place under ICC rules and AAA rules.
